Marbella Mosque

This beautiful Arabian temple overlooks the golden mile just to the west of the city centre (towards San Pedro). It was the first Mosque constructed in Spain since the Christian re-conquest in the fifteenth century. It was built in 1981 by then Prince Salmán bin Abdulaziz in honour of King Fahd bin Abdulaziz al-Saúd of Saudi Arabia.

Iglesia de San Pablo

The church is one of the oldest in Úbeda and is believed to have been built since the Visigoth period. Its location in a central square and its proximity to the old Town Hall make it have a marked assembly character, since until the fifteenth century, the City Council and the nobles met there.

Francisco Rivera Ordoñez

Legend has it that Francisco Rivera Ordoñez was born to fight bulls. His father was the famous bullfighter Paquirri who died bullfighting in Pozoblanco, Córdoba in 1984 when he was caught by the horns of a bull named “Avispado” (from the Spanish for wasp, “avispa”).

Jerez Airport - Statistics

Jerez Airport is located 9 km northeast from the city. It is the only civil airport in Cadiz province.

El Torcal de Antequera Natural Area

Thirty kilometres north of Malaga is the 12km² Torcal de Antequera Natural Area, with one of the most dramatic and exceptional karstic landscapes in Europe. This surreal and lunar grey limestone plateau, dating from the Jurassic period, is riven by deep gullies and characterised by its fantastically weathered natural sculptures, like the Tornillo Natural Monument.

Playa de Guadalmina

It lies just to the east of the Guadalmina River, and bounds the Guadalmina Urbanisation of Marbella it is close to the Hotel Guadalmina Golf and Spa Resort. If you fancy a cultural break from the sun and sea whilst you are there, you can visit the nearby Roman Baths: Las Bovedas. just behind its eastern end of the beach by Arroyo de Chopo.

History of Gualchos

Gualchos has its origins in the Nasrid farmhouses, possibly arising as a result of the desire to take advantage of the land for irrigated crops. Here we must highlight the mine, which was once a cistern, then a washing place and now a wonderful viewpoint, whose water source still provides spring water to the community.

Necrópolis Megalítica

A very extensive megalithic necropolis near the confluence of the Fardes and Guadix Rivers. These megaliths vary in shape and size, with approximately 15 tombs.

La Paula

La Paula, a gypsy dancer renown for her bulerias lived in the old flamenco district in Málaga known as El Perchel. Born in 1902 at number 16 Calle de los Negros, La Paula was the daughter of guitarist, Matias Garcia, and dancer, Antonia Fernádez.

Art Galleries

Many well known Spanish artists, including Antoni Tàpies and Soledad Sevilla, have their works exhibited at the AM Gallery. Pasaje de Torre Estrella 6, Plaza de Toros. Tel 950 171 708. The 16th-century Castillo de Santa Ana has been converted into a cultural centre where exhibitions of art and photography are held.

Hotels

Calahonda has not been subject to large developments like has been the case for some parts on the Costa Tropical and much of the Costa del Sol and therefore the coastal village has managed to preserve its' traditional identity. Calahonda can therefore provide a welcome escape from other areas on the Andalusian coastline.

Sunday Lunch

Whilst many tourists come to Spain for the tapas, tinto de verano, chorizo, gambas al ajillo and the never-ending supply of fish and seafood, others do not have the palate for pescado. It is also not uncommon for an expat living in Andalucía to simply have a hankering for a taste of home, and especially during the cooler winter months, there is nothing better than a traditional English Sunday roast.

Churriana - Gerald Brenan’s House

Brenan's happiest years were spent in La Reina de los Angeles, Calle Torremolinos 56. This era is now being celebrated and its literary significance acknowledged, as the house has reopened as a cultural centre. Malaga council has spent more than a decade and one million euros restoring the ‘Casa Gerald Brenan' as a centre to foster Anglo-Spanish cultural relations.
