Baños de la Encina

Baños de la Encina offers visitors interesting historical and artistic heritage as well as attractions for lovers of nature. Once called simply Baños, the village adopted ‘de la Encina’ (‘of the holm oaks’) in the thirteenth century, after a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary amongst the oak trees.

Museo Histórico Etnográfico

The Historical Ethnographic Museum was founded in 2002 by the Terque City Council and the Asociación de Amigos del Museo. It is located in one of the many nineteenth-century bourgeois houses in the town square. Following its rooms across two floors is a tour of local trades, many of them now disappeared, as well as domestic settings and religious.

Benitagla

Benitagla is a small and calm village surrounded by plots of almond and olive trees and vines. It has about 60 inhabitants. Benitagla was founded by the descendants of the Berber Tribes that settled in the Sierra de los Filabres between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in the Nasrid period. The earliest data of Benitagla stretches back to July 1488.

Sunshine Tour

The Sunshine Tour was created in the early nineties and has become the biggest equestrian winter competition in all of Europe. Its official name was the Circuito Hípico del Sol changed in 2022 to become the Andalucia Sunshine Tour as the regional tourist board became the main sponsors.

Abrucena

Abrucena offers a beautiful natural environment for its visitors. In the village centre, the streets are narrow and winding and lead to the most important building: the sixteenth-century church. It’s also worth visiting the ruins of El Castillejo, located on the banks of the river facing the village. It has about 1,200 inhabitants.

Marbella Hill Club is located just below La Concha mountain, and was developed in the 1970s by Prince Ferdinand von Bismarck, great grandson of the Otto von Bismarck Otto (1 April 1815 – 30 July 1898), known as Otto von Bismarck the conservative Prussian statesman who dominated German and European affairs from the 1860s until 1890 and was the first Chancellor of the German Empire between 1871 and 1890.

Museo de Micología

Dólar has a Mycology Centre dedicated to the study and exhibition of fungi. It showcases the local biodiversity and mountain environment of the Sierra Nevada region.

Alfacar

Alfacar is one of the entry points into to the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park. The area surrounding the village is wonderful for trekking and there are many paths to follow. Alfacar is also known as the place where Spain’s famous poet Federíco Garcia Lorca was shot during the Spanish Civil War. The village has therefore dedicated a park to his memory and that of others executed during the war. Alfacar has a population of around 5,200.

Arab Baths

One of the most relaxing traditions of Arab Spain are the baths, or “hammam” as they are called in Arabic. With so many years of moorish rule and culture, the city of Granada was a natural starting point for the return of this long lost custom.

History

Alquife has a long mining history, from the Bronze Age to modern times. Its iron mines shaped the local economy, and though activity declined in the late 20th century, the mines recently reopened.

Montefrio

Located off the tourist trail in the northwestern corner of Granada province near the Cordoba border, this friendly village enjoys one of the region's most striking settings, with one of its churches perched on top of a bare, rocky pinnacle, overlooking the town and its surrounding hillsides clothed in olive groves and fields of cereal crops. It nestles between two memorable hilltop churches; you can't miss either of them since they dominate the skyline.
