Religious icons are hugely popular in Andalucia; they are normally handcrafted from wood and porcelain and spend 99.9 per cent of the year in glass-covered alcoves at the local church. Most are dusted down and placed on flower-decked thrones at Easter-time when they are lovingly and solemnly borne through the streets. The Virgen del Carmen, however, has her own special day.
On the evening of July 16, in the fishing villages and towns up and down the Coast, her much-loved effigy is not only paraded through the streets but also taken for a spin round the bay on a flower-adorned boat, accompanied by a flotilla of "jábegas" (fishing boats). Brass bands play, crowds cheer, rockets shoot off and fireworks fill the late dusk sky.
Celebrations vary slightly from town to town. In Málaga city, for example, the procession takes place not only on July 16, but on the following Sunday. A recent Malagueñan tradition, started in 1981, shows the Virgen del Carmen embracing all lovers of the sea - including scuba divers. That year, the City scuba diving club placed an image of their patron at the bottom of the sea and since then divers have paid their underwater homage annually. Virgen del Carmen Coronada en El Perchel and del Carmen de los Submarinistas take place on the following Sunday, except 2026 it was Saturday because of the world cup final. The more tradition processions take place on the 16th in the Malaga city fishing districts of Pedregalejo on 16th July at 19.00 hrs and in El Palo on 16th July at 19.00 hrs
The festival is especially important in the fishing villages of neighbouring Rincon de la Victoria (both the town at 20.00 hrs and and at La Cala de Moral, and Benajarafe, both of which have the Virgen del Carmen as their town patron. In Nerja on the 16th at playa de la Torrecilla. Benalmadena, Cala de Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Castilla de la Duquesa, Sabinillas, Manilva.
To understand why the Virgen del Carmen should be held so dear to the inhabitants of towns such as Estepona, Velez Malaga, Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Rincon de la Victoria, we need to go back to the Old Testament. Downshifting in his old age, the prophet Elias retreated to a cave in Mount Carmelo near Haife (Israel). Many centuries later, hermits following in Elijah's footsteps asked for the protection of the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmelo - the Virgin of Carmen. Stella Maris, as she was also known, was soon adopted by mariners and fishermen everywhere as their patron.
Although long overtaken by tourism, many Costa towns still retain fishing communities and barrio pescadores (fisherman's quarter) and a strong attachment to "la Reina de los Mares" (the Queen of the Seas). It was once believed - perhaps in the days before water-purifying plants! - that the Virgin cleared up the waters with her presence and that only after July 16 would the sea be fit for swimming in.

Seville by the sea?
Although Seville is not by the sea, it does have the River Guadalquivir. The Virgen del Carmen de Calatrava will be taken out on the river on 15 July 2025 at 19.30 pm the chapel on calle Calatrava. The route is: Calatrava, Barqueta gate, Cayetana de Alba roundabout, paseo Juan Carlos I, Puente bridge embarkation. The river section takes place between the Puente Barqueta bridge and the Puente Cartuja footbridge. The return around 22.00 hrs it will take the following route: Paseo Juan Carlos I, Cayetana de Alba roundabout, Barqueta gate, Calatrava, Pasaje Conde de la Mejorada, Pasaje del Marqués de Esquivel, Pacheco y Núñez del Prado, Peral, Alameda de Hércules and Calatrava.
The Virgen del Carmen de Santa Catalina will also leave her chapel on 16 July 2025 at 21.15. The Virgen del Carmen del Santo Angel leaves from her chapel on 17th June 2025 at 20.00.

Algeciras
The procession of the Virgen del Carmen in Algeciras sets off at 19.00 hrs from the Capilla de la Caridad. As has been the case since 2000, Port Police officers accompany the statue along its route to the port.
La Línea de la Concepción
In La Línea de la Concepción the Virgen del Carmen traditionally begins at 18.00 hrs on the La Atunara district and beach. The procession starts from Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen at the northern end of La Atunada (where Calle Caretagena reaches the beach).
Tarifa
The traditional procession of the Virgen del Carmen in Tarifa is always on the 16th July. It begins with a mass at 12:00 hrs at the Church of San Mateo on Calle Sancho IV el Bravo 8. At 19.00 hrs, the procession begins, following a route along Calle Sancho IV el Bravo, then Calle Alcalde Juan Núñez, and finally to the fishing harbour. The statue is carefully loaded onto the boat for the traditional blessing of the waters of the Strait, accompanied by a flotilla of boats. In the morning, the fishing port is the place to watch the children's games organised by the Fishermen's Guild, which culminate in a free tasting of sardines and rice — an event open to residents and visitors alike.
Torreguadiaro, Sotogrande, San Roque
The procession of the Virgen del Carmen takes place every year on the 16th of July, starting at 19:00 hrs from the small church Iglesia del Carmen on Calle Iglesia in the fishermen's quarter of Torrequadiaro next to the 'new' (1796) watchtower. The procession goes down to the control tower on the outer breakwater of the Sotogrande Marina where the Virgen de Carmen is carefully loaded onto a barge that sails around to the 'Ensenada de Torreguadiaro' where the icon of Virgen del Carmen is transferred onto the beach. The procession returns to the church via Avenida del Mar.
Puente Mayorga, San Roque
In Puente Mallorga on the Bay of Algeciras in the municiapl district of San Roque the day begins at 07.00 with the Rosario de la Aurora and a mass, The procession will set off at 19:30. The evening will continue with the Verbena del Carmen.
Guadarranque, San Roque
In Guadarranque, the Rociera Mass takes place at 19:30 hrs in the chapel, after which the Virgin del Carmen is carried through the neighbourhood's streets. The procession typically passes along Calle Río, Calle Redes, Calle Palangre and Calle Barcos, before returning to the chapel. This will be followed by a popular 'sardina popular' on the beach. A sardina popular involves cooking large quantities of espeto sardines and rice, which are then given out free to residents and visitors of the village.
Palmones, Loss Barrios
In Palmones, Los Barrios, the Virgen del Carmen will begin her procession at 20.00 hrs from the local chapel to Playa Palmones, where she will be taken into the sea.
