Selwo - Estepona districts
By Sinéad Mangan-Mc Hale
Selwo is a residential area on the eastern side of Estepona, situated just inland from the A-7 coastal road. As with many districts in Estepona, its boundaries are informal and fluid, extending broadly between Avenida Parque Selwo and Arroyo de las Cañas on the mountainside. The area is centred around Selwo Aventura and is characterised by low-density development, with modern apartment complexes, townhouses, and villas spread across gently elevated hills overlooking the Mediterranean. Most day-to-day amenities are found in nearby coastal commercial areas rather than within Selwo itself, giving the district a quieter and more residential atmosphere.
Resedential
Residential development in Selwo has expanded steadily over several decades, particularly on the mountainside. The area contains a mixture of private villas, gated townhouse communities, and contemporary apartment developments built in phases from the 1990s through to the present day. The Arroyo de las Cañas urbanisations were developed progressively between 2001 and 2021. Smaller gated communities can also be found within these larger developments, such as Terrazas del Sol, completed in 2004. The Torre Vigía urbanisation combines homes dating from the late 1990s with newer phases completed around 2020. One of the area’s more recent developments is Vanian Gardens, a modern gated community comprising apartments, penthouses, townhouses, and luxury villas set around landscaped gardens and large communal pools, with phases continuing into 2026. Nearby, Oasis 22 is a compact development of contemporary semi-detached villas begun in 2020 on the border between Selwo and Resinera-Voladilla. Large umbrella urbanisations often extend across neighbouring districts due to the lack of clearly defined borders. For example, the Camino La Resinera community began with phases constructed in 1990 near Arroyo de las Cañas, with later developments extending into both Selwo and Resinera-Voladilla. Golf Hills in Selwo district is another established residential development with properties dating back to around 2007.

Places of interest
Selwo Aventura
The area’s principal attraction is Selwo Aventura, a large safari-style wildlife and adventure park designed as an outdoor nature experience rather than a traditional zoo. Set within extensive semi-natural grounds, the park is home to thousands of animals, including lions, giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and cheetahs. Visitors explore mainly on foot, with optional safari-style experiences available throughout the park. In addition to wildlife habitats, Selwo Aventura offers family-oriented adventure activities, including zip-lining, suspension bridges, camel rides, and educational animal presentations. The park also includes on-site accommodation. More about Selwo Adventure>
Corredor Fluvial de las Cañas Corredor Fluvial de las Cañas is a landscaped riverside green corridor in the Selwo area that follows the Arroyo de las Cañas inland. Designed as part of Estepona’s environmental improvement projects, it combines walking and cycling paths with native vegetation, small bridges, and natural riverbank areas, creating a quieter recreational space between nearby residential developments within Selwo and Resinera-Voladilla. Although mainly used by residents rather than tourists, the corridor is valued for its semi-rural atmosphere, mountain views, and easy access to nature close to the coast.
Unicorn Raquet Club
A sports club that offers a variety of activities, padel courts, gymnasium, yoga and fitness activities, a Kids Club and a Wellness Cottage as well as an on-site café offering healthy options. Located on Calle Lima.
Holiday Accommodation
Holiday accommodation in the area is largely centred on Selwo Aventura and the surrounding residential communities. Within the park itself, Hotel Selwo Lodge offers several African-themed lodging options. Watu Village features circular stone-and-wood cabins positioned at the Mirador de África with panoramic Mediterranean views, while the Masai Village cabins are located among tropical vegetation within the park’s Pórtico de la Naturaleza area. The more exclusive Zulú Villas are situated beside the park’s lake and provide larger accommodation with direct park access. Beyond the park, visitors can choose from a wide range of private holiday rentals, including villas, apartments, and townhouses located throughout Selwo’s various urbanisations.

Shopping
Shopping facilities within Selwo itself are relatively limited, although the surrounding districts provide convenient access to supermarkets, fresh produce stores, and everyday services. Most residents and visitors shop in nearby areas such as Cancelada, Bel-Air, or Estepona town. Weekly street markets and independent fruit and vegetable shops in nearby districts are also popular for fresh seasonal produce and local products. More about Cancelada>
Restaurants
Dining options within Selwo are limited. Bossa Estepona is a well-known family-run café, bakery, and delicatessen on Avenida Parque Selwo offering fresh food, natural products, and private catering services. Nearby, Venta El Perejil provides a more traditional Andalucian dining experience with regional cuisine in a casual setting. An abandoned property was renovated and opened as the successful rustic Venta Casario in 1994 before moving to Parque Antena in 2011. The empty building was vandalised and later restored and opened again as Venta El Perejil in 2019. Within Selwo Aventura, several casual dining venues operate throughout the park, including Korongo, a self-service restaurant in the central village area, and the Pórtico Barbecue Restaurant, overlooking the Lake of Africa, which serves grilled dishes, pizzas, and café-style dining throughout the day. There is also a café located in the Unicorns Raquet Club on Calle Lima.
Bus Service

Car Hire, Taxi and Transfers
In addition to hiring a car in Estepona, Malaga Airport, or Gibraltar Airport, Estepona taxis and several firms offer private transfers by minibus car or limousine to and from the airport and the surrounding areas. Bolt and Uber Apps also work within the district.
For those who want to enjoy more of the sights of Andalucía, the district is situated close to the A-7 coastal highway and within a short distance of the AP-7 toll road. This road is typically quieter, but there are toll booths at Manilva, San Pedro and Calahonda in both directions – tolls can be paid in cash, by credit card, or VIA-T (non-stopping) so visitors can easily access destinations on either side of Estepona. Along the coast to the west, these include Sotogrande, Gibraltar, Tarifa and the golden sand beaches of Costa de la Luz. Along the coast to the east, these include Marbella and Malaga. They can also explore the inland villages of Casares and Gaucin on the road to Ronda. Not forgetting the magnificent cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada.
